Paul Edgar
Many posts and plans mention hardwood for a miter runner or some other use. My question is where do folks get this hardwood? And what are the dimensions available? I'm used to the big box store and all I can find in any dimensions is knotty pine. Anyone buying flooring or are there other sources I'm not aware of? RichardA
Phone book! Lumber, hardwood lumber.. Craigslist under "materials" And there are many on line suppliers!
wtnhighlander
I feel your pain, Paul. There are no retail hardwood stores less than 80 miles from me. I have ordered online and received good stock, but shipping costs are high. Craigs List occasionally turns up a deal, but it is hit or miss on quality.
xxdabroxx
The only stuff I can get local is what they have available at the HD. For some reason they don't think hardwoods come in anything thicker than 3/4. Kinda sucks. Kinda sucks a lot. there is always: http://www.curlymaplewood.com/ http://www.bellforestproducts.com/ http://www.hardwoodtogo.com/ (I have used none of the above links but have bookmarked them for future use)

Eric.
Paul, I'll be up at the lumberyard for the next four days...and bored to death most of the time. If you want me to put a small pack together for you just say the word. Maybe a sample pack so you can lay your hands on several different species. Shipping will be pretty stupid, but if you can't find a local source you may be stuck with mail-order. But you'll have the advantage of having someone who knows wood hand-picking boards for you. We have most common domestics and exotics available. I can get you a list of species and prices if you're interested. Let me know...
Guest
Google "washington DC hardwood dealer." You have plenty of options. http://www.colonialhardwoods.com/lumber.html http://www.exoticlumberinc.com/ http://www.viennahardwoods.com/about.html Be prepared for some stick shock. high quality hardwoods are expensive. Also, if you are new to buying hardwood, these videos help you understand how hardwood is priced and sold. It does not normally come in standard dimensions like framing lumber does. It is sold with the assumption you have the equipment and ability to dimension it down to the length, width and thickness you want. You can buy "S4S" lumber (which means surfaced 4 sides) but it is even more expensive and, in my experience, not the best quality. Wood always moves after it is milled, so if something was milled to s4s a year ago, it will not be flat anymore. http://www.thewoodwhisperer.com/videos/a-lumbering-feeling/ http://www.renaissancewoodworker.com/demystifying-the-lumber-yard/

If your yard is on the Southern side of St. Louis, you might actually be more convenient for me to visit than places I have found so far in my home state! Eric.
We're on the west side in St. Charles County...the furthest from TN we could be. But if south county St. Louis isn't a huge drive for you, we're only another 30 minutes or so away. You should road trip it up here one day. I was reading where there are several people who have volunteered to help re-landscape DC in about 18 months and it will be a really nice place to visit! Barron
If you are in the D.C. Area the Springfield, VA Woodcraft used to carry some hardwoods. Not cheap, but the folks at Colonial Hardwoods were great to work with.

Pete Staehling
Depending on what you need the big box stores almost always have some maple, red oak, and poplar on hand. It typically isn't the greatest selection and isn't especially cheap, but they usually are conveniently located to just about anywhere. Woodcraft in Rockville might not be too far for you and has a little somewhat high priced hardwood. Personally I'd just make the drive up to Groffs in Lancaster County PA a couple times per year and consider it a fun outing. I love that place and miss it a lot since I moved to Florida. Heck I will probably still buy a lot of my lumber from them even now that I live in Florida. I'll drive up when the wife wants to visit family in Maryland rather than fly so that I can haul lumber home. http://www.groffslumber.com/

ncfowler
with a little research you can find almost anything, the other day I ran across two suppliers by accident, If you know any contractors especialy finish contractors that is a good source for some hard wood, I have a friens who is a finish contractor and he will give me a call when he has some odd and ends, most times he just give them to me, while other just a few bucks, or taking him fishing, also look for finishing mills, these are the mills who dry the wood and get it ready for shipping, most times they have some odd pices they will almost give away, I have two local mills I visit and after they get to know me it's just a phone call of what I'm looking for, right now I'm looking for western ceadar at a fair price. another place is like mention before is Creglist, I'm sure in your area you can find a person who has a bandsaw mill, for hire, they are always a good source, one thing I found over the years it don't cost anything to ask, if there are any custom cabinet shops around your area don't be afraid to ask, losts of time they are like most of us that keep small blanks,. another good place is companies who tear down houses. they will go inside and reclaim anything of value, I have no problems with re-use wood, found severa around in my area, got some american chestnut, they did not know what they had, maked as oak,
Brendon_t
Figured I'd throw it out, if your just needing enough stock for a few runners and such, let me know the lengths you need. I'm sure I can hook you up with enough from my long scrap pile. You pay for a usps tube and its yours.
Virginia Mark
One more lumber supplier near DC is Northland Forest Products in Manassas. Sells domestic hardwoods and one or two exotics.
CessnaPilotBarry
Consider plywood for runners... End grain is super durable, stable, and holds lubricating wax well. Back to find you decent wood for real projects... ;^)
