Chimpanzee
I've built some basic pine shelve in our kitchen. So far I've painted them with a whitewash (approx 50/50 water/emulsion) and sanded them back slightly. I like the matt finish and natural wood feel they have at the moment but I would also like to give them some protection from the steam and general wear and tear they'll go through in the kitchen. I have no idea what kind of finish to go for to maintain (as much as possible) the look and touch of un-protected wood. I'm very much a novice at woodworking so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Andrew
TerryMcK
Try a matt waterbourne polyurethane like General Finishes High Performance top coat. The matt one they actually call flat. You can put it over the top of their milk paints like white which might be better than emulsion.
RichardA
Rustolem makes a water based poly with a matte finish, but I go 3 coats minimum sanding 320 first coat 400 2nd coat and 600 finish coat, then a coat of Johnsons paste wax.! Chimpanzee
Thanks for the the suggestions. I'll look for a water-based polyurethane matte (or maybe satin) finish. Really appreciate the help. Thank you!
