Grasslakedoc
I have a 5 inch random orbit sander and am looking to go for a high-gloss lacquer finish. I see one way is to use 1000+ grit sand paper, and inherited a pack of 6" Abrasion discs. Will I get good results from using the 6" or should I spring for the 5" online? Thanks much in advance. wdwerker
You could try trimming one down and see how that works. I would be afraid of the unsupported material tearing and leaving marks.
Tom King
It'll sharpen a pair of scissors used for trimming it.
wtnhighlander
Do the disks have holes for vacuum dust removal? They probably won't line up, but it isn't a deal breaker.
wdwerker
Abrasion discs or Abralon ( similar to ScotchBrite)
Boatworks Today
Depending on the sander it may not make much of a difference. The key is maintaining a random orbit with a rotary action. If the sanding pad gets dogged down and no longer maintains a rotary action tour going to be left with deep pigtails. If the pad keeps rotating with the random orbit then you'll get a clean sanding action. If it dogs down, lighten the downward pressure. Worst case is you use the sander for the bulk work and finish up by hand to get a more uniform scratch pattern :-)
