Popular Post Eric.
I'm not planning on building the gaming table...not anytime soon anyway...but I did build a poker table a few years ago. I have a couple suggestions for any of you guys who intend to make this gaming table primarily for card games. This speed cloth is great:http://www.casinosupply.com/casino-poker-table-waterproof-suited-speed-cloth-sold-per-running-foot-red/It's pretty high quality stuff and doesn't "fuzz up" like felt does. I originally used felt on my table and it was a fuzzy mess after only a few evenings of games. I switched to this stuff and it's still good as new after several years of semi-regular use. It's cool looking with the suited pattern.Allegedly "waterproof." I kind of doubt that but at least there's some kind of protection from spills built into the cloth. I haven't found out because I have a strict policy: if you spill beer on my table, you're taken outside and beaten with a rubber hose. Amazingly there have been zero spills so far.Cards slide very well when dealing. Impress your friends by looking like a pro dealer! LOLAdd some high quality plastic cards if you really want to impress people. I love these Copags:http://www.amazon.com/Copag-Poker-Regular-Index-Playing/dp/B000A4RZC2For padding underneath the speed cloth I used an automotive headliner padding, similar to this:http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/280980573545?ul_noapp=true&chn=ps&lpid=82It's quite thin and gives just enough cushion to the table without being "pillowy." It's easy to slip a thumb under your cards to peek at your hand, yet your chip stacks are perfectly stable and can be stacked super high for maximum psychological domination. Also the pad allows for the perfect crash of chips when you splash the pot with a ridiculous over-bet. My buddy Randy over-bets with an aggressive pot splash every time he's bluffing. Don't tell him I know...he's payed for a number of tools thus far. Anyway, I know this post is very specific to card players, but I figure I couldn't be the only one...

thewoodwhisperer
Thanks Eric. I actually just ordered similar materials, including the waterproof speed cloth and padding. So it looks like I made some good choices. Actually, my buddy Steve made the recommendations and I simply took his word for it.
Eric.
This thread needs a pic of your table...Right now it's buried under blankets and a mountain of "stuff" due to the basement finishing project. I'll take pics of it once it's out of hibernation. Could be a while.
Llama
Good idea. I was thinking of using pool table cloth for the same reason. No fuzzies, well, and it will match my table. And yeah... This thread sucks without pics!
RichardA
What did you expect? Eric's bosses at the three lettered company, have to go through the classification process before he can release them to a specific segment of the public! Tom Cancelleri
I built a poker table at work in 2008 with a coworker. We covered it with a thin layer of padding and speed cloth. We used it for a charity game we organized. Speed cloth is great stuff, liquids will bead up on it long enough that you can wipe it off before it soaks in. wouldwurker
Excited about this one...the last few guild builds were a bit too intimidating for me. Will the show surface be a high quality speciality hardwood plywood?
Popular Post Coop
Does the speed cloth leave heal marks once the ladies get down off of it?

Bigduke6
Just starting my first Guild build and saw your poker post. I just did a "rustic" poker table. Really had a fun time with it. Live edge with burled cedar base. Had the top made custom by BBO. Came out nice.

ClassAct
For some DIY play surface discussion with pros/cons, I recommend a visit to BoardGameGeek: https://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1336027/game-table-design-series-game-table-features-play Plenty of game table builds or table toppers of varying quality, but even anecdotal experience helps provide some data points before making your decision.
