tcarswell
I had never really worked with slabs before my windfall. Now obviously I got a few tables in the works. I can't find any books omon slab tables and woodworking with slabs . Any suggestions? They are all between 19 and 22 wide and 65 to 75 long at a fat 8/4 claro walnut blah blah you guys know the story PS yes they are all stickered now Edited August 26, 2015 by tcarswell
wdwerker
I saw a large mirror frame with a live edge on the inside at a gallery in NYC. I thought it would be a great project for a narrow slab. It was 4" to 6" wide walnut and the mirror was about 3'x 7'.
wtnhighlander
Those are obviously taking up too much space in your shop, and should be dispersed among your woodworking brethren. ? Slab benches and floating shelves come to mind. Example: https://youtu.be/9_tvpVozSrc
Eric.
Soul of a Tree by George Nakashima. It's not really a how-to kind of book but inspiration abounds within the pages, both in photos and in philosophy. Nakashima is the Alpha and Omega when it comes to walnut slabs. ..Kev
All depends on what you want to make with the wood. Working with a live edge slab just saves you some time making the top of a table. The base is still the same.
RPCV_Woodworker
I see what you did there - nice way to cut down a full foot or so of space!

Tom Cancelleri
Here's one of my favorite tablesThose tables are nice, keep in mind that getting that piece of glass cut and shipped to you will cost you at least 400 bucks.
Coop
I like George Nakashima's work as well. His daughter and team still produce some fantastic pieces.
Brendon_t
TC, agreed. It's pretty spendy but an awesome looking piece. Another +1 for George Nakashima for ideas.
Guest
You have a lot of lumber there. Don't let yourself get pigeon-holed into just doing live edge slab work. Yes you can make some nice table tops and should. But 2" thick slabs like that (and a bandsaw) give you other options. Make some nice shop-sawn crotch veneer for floating panels. Saw some into book-matched 4/4 boards. I'd cut off any checked ends and put some paint or anchor seal on the end grain. It will help keep the checking from spreading. Brendon_t
Mike, good point about seeing them all as useable lumber. They don't all have to stay slabs until you build 8 tables. There are definately some cool pieces in there and if used propperly, no reason you couldn't get a whole few projects out of one slab. Also check out Maurice blok on YouTube. He builds a beautiful slab table and benches. Edited August 26, 2015 by Brendon_t
