Popular Post Eric.
...make a bowl. A little one. I got bored last night and had a hankerin' for some wood mangling. Since the jointer is out of commission and I refuse to mill boards by hand, flat work is pretty much out of the equation for me for a few more weeks. This is what I love about the lathe...slap a chunk of wood on it...in an hour or two you have a completed project. Fun stuff. There is absolutely nothing special about this bowl...except: - It's genuine rosewood - I turned it start to finish without pants on
Llama
uh... So your piece has rosewood dust on it? It's a fine bowl Eric. Nicely done!

bgreenb
Dude! That looks awesome! No joke man, I know it's a simple piece in appearance, but ain't nothing simple about it. Nice job. How much rosewood do you have? Just bowl blanks or do you have boards?

How much rosewood do you have? Just bowl blanks or do you have boards? The day after my jointer debacle I went around to the woodworking stores to see if the guys knew anyone who could help me. After my queries were rebuffed I just kind of walked around Rockler, dejected, eyes on the ground, hands in pockets, kicking a pebble. I glanced over and noticed the shelves of bowl blanks and my angst melted away. Some people buy a gross of bonbons when they're depressed...I got these... That bottom blank was this bowl...East Indian. That's all I had. I love rosewood, but it's so expensive.

rodger.
I would like to get a large in the near future. I have zero turning experience though, so a class will be in order. What lathe do you have, and would you recommend it?

It's a beast and I like everything about it. But I'm not much of a turner so don't put too much stock in my opinion...still learning my way around this thing and a long way to go. Seems to get pretty consistent positive reviews though.
estesbubba
The bowl is very appealing to the eye and using a DSLR only enhances it. Nice job on it.

Coop
I can't even turn over in bed naked. Major obstacle. Damn Eric, you're getting pretty decent on that lathe!
Eric.
Thanks guys! I'm still very green and just getting a feel for turning...still doing very basic stuff. But it's a lot of fun and you can create some neat things with minimal time invested. I'm thoroughly enjoying the lathe so far...no regrets. For a minute there after I bought it and set it up, all I could think was, damn - that's a lot of real estate to give up in my shop. But now I'm happy I did it. I think I'll try to tackle a box or two next. Baby steps.
wnaziri
That is a beautiful bowl. Like you, I am big fan of rosewood. By the way, you have some awesome tools. wtnhighlander
Eric, thanks for the image of a lovely rosewood bowl! Too bad the image of a certain pantsless woodworker is now permanently etched over it. ?

Coop, wait for the viagra to wear off then try again. The "major" obstacle should become a minor one and you will then be able to turn over. Vyrolan
So why not go 12 or 16"? Just curious.cost and space. Eric will no doubt be here shortly to lament how he's down to 4 square inches of free space in his shop.
Eric.
cost and space. Eric will no doubt be here shortly to lament how he's down to 4 square inches of free space in his shop. Yep. Not only would I be looking at a complete shop re-orgo to fit a 12" jointer, but it's nearly twice the price for four more inches of capacity. Nah. I don't have that kind of money to throw around for so little return. I think we all have that moment when we dream about a 12" jointer as if it's plausible...I awoke from that dream a long time ago. Cliff
Local woodworker around here has a 16" but it's 30 years old. Must work great though since he makes his living on this stuff. I think he bought it from a school for $300.

Tom Cancelleri
Nice bowl E, it's about time that thing turns stuff into round objects. Turning is very relaxing and therapeutic, there are no dimensions, there's no measuring, just work in the moment until you make something you're happy with. Maybe it's a weird turner thing, I've stood at my lathe and turned pens, and bowls in a tshirt, slippers, and a pair of boxers. Boxes are like a bowl on steroids, there's some little tricks and nuances that go along with it. If you're turning the entire thing from one piece it can get a bit interesting while you figure it out.
AceHoleInOne
Ah turning, instant wood gratification. Just a man with withered hands surrounding his favorite tool. Eyes engaging a spinning block of wood. Then ever so lightly, engage your tool, battling back and forth side to side. Chips falling to the ground like soft winter snowflakes As time passes, behold! We have a bowl. The happy ending...hands moist with oil and wax, faster and faster we spin the lathe, friction more friction. WOW what a finish!!!! Bowl looks great, awesome job Moderator! -Ace-
