Adam Kyle
Hello everyone,I am currently working on a project where I am finishing Ash for the first time. I absolutely love the look of the wood before it is finished, it's deep grain and the contrast between the smokey and white colors are beautiful. That said, I've been playing with a number of different finishes and everyone has yellowed the ash. What finish would you recommend to maintain the color the most? I was looking into an acrylic-modified lacquer, thoughts? What experiences have you had? Should I even finish the wood? The ash is being used for some whiskey gift boxes. Thanks for the help! rodger.
Ash is a great hardwood, and I have worked with it quite a bit.to keep the wood looking natural, without yellowing, I would go with a water based polyurethane. General finished makes a great one called "high performance poly" which you can get at lee valley, among other places.
wtnhighlander
Agreewith Pug - water borne finishes will change the color much less than oil based finishes.
wdwerker
I agree on using water bournes to keep the color lite. Another finish for ash is to dye it black then use a a water bourne finish. This really looks good and shows off the grain !
..Kev
I too am a fan of the WB finishes on ash. I tend to like the natural look so haven't used Steve's option but, that's a personal preference. I'm sure if he suggests it, it would work awesome!
