jimmyjwazup
Hello all, once it gets to trimming time/temp I'll be trimming my Apple tree, including a growth about 4.5 inches in diameter. I would like to make something out of it and would like ideas. My thought was making an oblong bowl, or maybe some cups. Brendon_t
If branches ate what your trimming, the lathe is your friend. I've seen apple used somewhere, it was pretty cool.
Tpt life
Apple makes nice tool handles and pulls. A plane knob and tote come to mind. Cups and bowls are possible but apple tends to branch often leaving some imperfections buried deep. Apple makes superb smoking chips as well if you save some of the off cut chunks.
wdwerker
My grandfather used to carve chains out of wood. He got on a kick of carving fruit and nut woods . I've got a chain made from Apple , plum, walnut and butternut. So you can definitely carve Apple .
wtnhighlander
Apple is tradionally used for wooden nuts, as for a vice.
jimmyjwazup
I don't have a lathe but my brother might. The small pieces I'll definitely save for smoking, and any shavings if I go that route. I'd just like to start making stuff from what I have instead of throwing it away if possible. Best to carve green or let cure and dry out? Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
carbonman
I got some bug killed apple wood from my neighbor that was intended for fire wood. It layed around for years, until I moved back to the house. I pulled a few pieces out of the pile to see what was there. Once I got it milled to a block, it looked bad. Cracked, worm holes.....but I decided to continue. After I got the box cut and glued back together I had kind of an epiphany. The cracks, the worm holes, the ragged bark....were all part of the character of the box. It came out very nice. I decided to give it back to my neighbor. Turns out, the tree had a very sentimental value to her. You never know what you will find in a piece of wood.
