Split dresser top

Hi, everyone. I refinish and restore as a hobby and have only finished minor projects so far. I bought a federal style dresser that had a lot of damage to the mahogany veneer so I removed it. I found cracks in the underlying wood and am trying to figure a way to fix them so they aren't a problem for a future owner. I briefly considered laying new veneer, but would these splits cause a problem? If I go ahead and just paint, will wood filler or glue suffice in keeping it from splitting further? Thanks for any advice y'all can give!

Ok, what about filling with epoxy and painting instead? I honestly do not have the tools or know-how to remove and replace that slat. I'm trying to balance the time/materials and effort that go into this with how much I'll be able to sell it for...while making sure it's not going to fall apart on the buyer. Not looking for shortcuts, please understand, only the most time and resource effective way of fixing the problem.

Btw, thank you for your input so far, Eric and wtnhighlander...!

You could fill the crack with epoxy and it would fix the crack...problem is that's probably pith, so there's no reason to think it won't crack again right next to the old crack.  Pith just wants to crack.  It's like the scorpion and the frog fable...it's in its nature.

If the piece isn't worth your time then don't spend the time.  But in order to fix it the right way you really need to get that board out of there.  Filling with epoxy will be your second best option...a distant second best.
