Janello
I am pricing up a cabinet build for a client and they want a few that are 86 tall x 48 Wide x 17 deep. This cabinet will have 2 doors full overlay. This will be a paint grade project and they want flat panel doors. I was thinking about making all the doors out of poplar 3/4 glue up, which would bring them appox 86 tall 24 wide. Will that be stable enough hung on 3 hinges? If not is there a way to make them more stable or another paint grade material that would be better to use?
Janello
This is what I was thinking but they want a flat panel and I am worried about movement with this construction design, scan.pdf Edited November 18, 2015 by Janello
TerryMcK
As you are painting you may like to consider MDO plywood.
Janello
Yes, they will have it painted. I'm not familiar with MDO, can you elaborate? Is it Medium Density Particle Board with a ply veneer? Strasberry
Medium density overlay plywood Sent from my XT907 using Tapatalk
TerryMcK
Sign painters use it as it has such a smooth service. Its substrate is plywood and is used for outdoor applications as well as furniture. Edge band it and paint and it'll look great.
bgreenb
Yup if you are painting it I would definitely go with an engineered material instead of solid wood. Like Terry said, just edge band it and you'll be good to go.

wdwerker
Over 40" tall use 3 hinges, after 64 use 4 hinges. Approaching 96 I would use 5 hinges. Wide doors need the support and the hinge effort to keep the door shut.Leveling and squaring the cabinet when installing is important . MDO ply is a good idea. Bobby Slack
Consider soft maple and for doors that size I would suggest using thicker material. At least the finish thickness of 1". hinges. Salice have better adjustments and heavier duty than Grass or Blumm
