wouldwurker
II'm starting Christmas presents before 12/23. This is a new record for me. Latter making roughly 10 grasshoppers last year, I've moved on to the next project in the Heirloom Toys book - a tugboat. This one is much easier as there are no moving parts. I'll be making a bunch so I made a rather durable jig for routing out the hull. It cradles the stock, which works out well. I'm trying to get in the habit of making more jigs in my woodworking. There's something very satisfying about the problem solving aspect of it all. Edited November 22, 2015 by vinnyjojo
sjk
Jigs are awesome. I used to be frustrated making them until I saw the trick of supergluing them together on one of Marc's videos. Are they for relatives or a toy drive or....? Llama
Jigs are the key to repeatability! I hope those poop machines appreciate the hard work you're putting in. You may want to put in a LED and something that makes noise, just so play with it.
wtnhighlander
Looking forward to seeing these, Vinny. No kids of appropriate age on my gifts list these days, but these kinds if toys are great for charities and such.

Tpt life
It goes in the bathtub!!That is the beauty of LED. They come in sealed varieties making them popular for boat trailers and boats themselves. All you need is a water tight power source. wouldwurker
I'm going to start blaming you guys for all my 'project creep' issues. Next thing you'll recommend is a VHF band emergency radio.

RichardA
I'm going to start blaming you guys for all my 'project creep' issues. Next thing you'll recommend is a VHF band emergency radio. You must have been a young man from the East coast, my friend! Seems that the gentle folks that hug either coast tend to think everyone else is to fault for their lack of completion! But I've met you, and you seem like a go getter, so get that fleet in the water.. you can do it!
wouldwurker
I decided that pine only for the hull would be too boring, so I cleaned up some old weather beaten redwood that Wdwrker gave me. wouldwurker
Glued up 3 redwood sandwiches in one clip. MDF, wax paper, and a piece of tile make for a nice caul. Why do I need I need 10 clamps for this glue up? Because 11 clamps won't fit. My sandwiches came out pretty tasty Friction fit right back in my jig - ready to route the hull. Lots of routing .... wouldwurker
Cut out the hull on the bandsaw with the table tilted 10 degrees. Have a feeling the laminated hull will look 100 times cooler... Yep...way cool. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

wouldwurker
My favorite tool of all time of the week is rubber cement. Used the same paper template 5 times. Sticks tight, and peels right off again.

wouldwurker
That's pretty sweet Vinny. What is your plan for finish? on them? Seal a Cell and a few coats of West system Epoxy. Possibly some milk paint on the non-redwood sandwich boat hulls

Coop
Vinny, expand on the rubber cement. One, I've never seen it and two, wouldn't 3M work just as well with multiple copies?
wouldwurker
Most of my prior experiences with rubber cement mainly involved sniffing it. Elmers makes it. It's a weird snotty glue that you apply with a brush attached to the metal lid. It holds tight, peels off easily (even easier with a little heat), and unlike spray 3m adhesive, you can apply it anywhere (without weaponized aerosol turning your shop into flypaper).
