collinb
My planer came with a couple of chunks of mahogany. So I decided to make something with it for a Christmas present. It's a plant stand. The top is a sapele veneer. Beautiful grain pattern. The sides were routed with the obvious bits.I did like working with the mahogany. It shapes easily. This was my first time doing a veneer. Cutting it was a challenge until I figured out to clamp down a steel straight edge. Then it cut perfectly. I first glued it down with 3M 77. Seemed to hold well. Wife proceeded to use a water-based polycoat. It all wrinkled up. Not pretty. She added a subsequent layer of oil-based polycoat on top of it and most of the wrinkles went away. It's still not "right" but it will do as a learning experience. Note: The oil polycoat soaked in and brought out the sapele grain that the wanter-based did not.
