Was at a local auction on Tuesday.  There were some planes of interest.  Unfortunately there was someone else there (apparently a collector) who wanted them more than I.  Still, I ended up spending about $20 on a modern Sargent, roughly the same size as a #6.  (I sold my #6 b/c I didn't want to spend the TLC hours it needed.)

The point: Had a conversation with another bidder about his use of old planes.  What he does when needed is get planes (I guess ones that are pretty beat up) for the tote.  He takes off the tote and uses it as a handle on a jig.  It's a cheap way to get a quality grip.  Very often a plane with a good tote, but in rough shape, will sell for just a few bucks.

Probably nothing new to many here, but thought it might be a useful idea to pass along.
