dieter268
Hello to all, Years ago I have made a endgrain cutting board out of oak for my Sister (and for me too, of course). My sister's board has some quite bad knife marks from daily use and abuse over the years. I will visit her for a few days soon and I would like to plane her board when I am there. The marks are too deep to just sand them out, and that oak finished with a bees wax / oil mixture is a pain in the butt to sand (done it with mine ... ) I do not have much expierience with cabinet scrapers, would it be a sufficient path to scrape the whole board before hitting with a sander ? It would be small and light weight to take it with me, so it seems a perfect solution. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance Dieter
James Wright
My choice would be a low angle jack plane. A scraper would do it faster then sanding but it would only take 1/1000 or so per pass and it would require a lot of sharpening. And with a scraper once it is done there is no need to sand it. Eric.
Take it home and send it through the drum sander, then ship it back to her. Planing an end grain cutting board - although it's possible - is not a rational thing to do.
wtnhighlander
Make a new one to take with you when you visit.
dieter268
Thanks Guys! As mine and her's are the same size and material we decided that I give her mine, freshly finished, and take her's to take care of at home. I don't have a drum sander, but I have a milling machine at my (job) workshop so I mill the surface. We exchange boards, so to say.
