Popular Post midorikamakiri
Hello everyone, first post here! I got into woodworking about 1.5 years ago and I really enjoy spinning. I put together a short (four minute) video showing the process of my pen making. The entire process takes me about 10 days to complete, but that's including the time it takes for the lacquer to cure. I'm not sure what details to include... but here a few: The pore filler is timbermate ebony, that's my "go to" when working with cocobolo I use furniture grade lacquer. In my experience, it's a lot more durable than the stuff you find at the home centers. Thanks for watching!
Gixxerjoe04
Nice video and pen, my only question is why not use CA for this finish instead of waiting so long for the lacquer? Main reason I like turning pens, probably nothing quicker to go from raw materials to finished product.
midorikamakiri
Hi Gixxerjoe! Thanks for watching! I tend to change up my routine here and there to be honest. I'll make a batch of pens with nitro, a batch with poly (not cocobolo!), and sometimes a batch with CA glue. I do tend to favor working with lacquer over the rest, but that is influenced by other projects... not just pen making.
shaneymack
Welcome to the forum Mark! The cocobolo pen is real sexy. I enjoyed your video making skills as well! Sent from my SM-N910W8 using Tapatalk
midorikamakiri
Thanks for the compliments, Shaneymack! I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
Gixxerjoe04
Ah, did like the filler idea, have had problems before with cocobolo. I use friction polish at the end and if I didn't get them filled with CA, of course the polish sticks in the pours and pisses me off haha. -MattK-
really cool! Great videography skills, man! I've done some lathe work but haven't tried a pen yet - would love to learn more about how you mount it on the lathe and other tools needed. (more of a generic comment, not expecting you to instruct me!)
midorikamakiri
Yes, Grixxerjoe, I think we've all been there... polish in the pores haha! Hi Matt, thanks for the compliments. It's easy (and fun!) to get into the groove of making pens. Sure! Here are some things that have worked for me: For mounting the pen blanks, I use a typical pen mandrel. The ends of the mandrels are usually threaded for a thumb screw that compresses your pen blanks and bushings. Throw that thumb screw out and get yourself a mandrel saver for your tailstock. The mandrel saver greatly reduces the chance of bowing your pen mandrel. As for the tools, I use a Robert Sorby 3 piece pen making set, it's labeled as #36HS. Also, a barrel trimmer comes in handy for trimming the blank flush with the brass tubing. I hope this info helps! Mark

Brendon_t
Not a turner but I enjoyed that. Great use of the sapwood.
