Popular Post toddclippinger
In this video I share how I cut small parts on the miter saw. I am sure this one will be cause for active commentary from the safety police and maybe the hand tool junkies for not using a fancy hand saw to cut small pieces. Well, this is the way I do it in the American Craftsman Workshop. Because if the tool doesn't make any noise and throw a rooster tail of sawdust, how am I supposed to know that any work is getting done? Hope you enjoy the video and find it helpful;) Remember to let your work be your signature. Your friend in the shop, Todd A. Tom Cancelleri
I just make a piece for my table saw sled with the angle I need, and attach it to my sled, I've cut parts 1/2" big on it. No worries.
shaneymack
Unless im hallucinating, I think your shop caught fire at the end of the video. I see smoke on the left side. You alright man? I hope the next video isnt called "how to properly store oily rags to avoid a shop fire ! " Good video Todd, hope your shop is alright !
toddclippinger
Tom - The tablesaw sled is a great choice, it produces safe and accurate cuts. I do this on job sites a lot for small trim, and that was the direction I went with my method. In the shop, my miter saw is next to my assembly bench. It would be 25' over to the tablesaw. Shane - Uhmm... ya...I might need to do an oily rag safety video...

Gary-ks
To keep your shop make fence from sliding around why can't you glue some find grit sandpaper on the bottom side to help keep it from sliding around. On one part of your demonstration after you set it to zero and just before you make the cut I saw the jig slip a tiny bit just before you made the cut.....

That is certainly an option and you could give it a try. My situation is this: A lot of times I am doing this on a job site with other people involved with using my equipment and jigs. I am good about not cutting all the way through, but some guys make the plunge a bit deep, then they would be cutting the sandpaper and dulling the tips of my blade prematurely. Other than that, I have never had an issue in actual application with getting inaccurate cuts so it never crossed my mind to add a non-slip bottom. But the great thing about this - is that you just came up with another idea to make it better

Eric.
Nice video Todd. Hope your burns heal up alright. More and more often I've been making miters on small parts at my disc sander with a miter gauge. Almost zero risk of accident or injury and you can make microscopic adjustments easily.

PeteJr
Informative and entertaining and I learned new techniques. Your chop saw jigs are an excellent idea that I can use on my storm window project.
