pgelburd
I need a way to create a crisp, clean line where I'm applying Java Gel Stain on a maple leg. Painter's tape (green) doesn't seem to give a clean line. Any suggestions?
wtnhighlander
Stain penetrates raw wood. Try taping the line, then applying a seal coat of thinned clear shellac over the piece, including the tape. Let it dry, then apply stain. The shellac should help to prevent the stain from bleeding under the tape. It won't be perfect, but may work well enough. Most gel-type stains work well as a glaze over a clear coat, so your chances of success are good.
Denette
Depending on the specific needs of your project this may or may not be an option, but could you stain the boards separately then join them together. No risk of bleeding that way. It would be similar to gluing up two contrasting woods for, say, a cutting board.
