Refinishing

This is my first post. I need some advice, I'm refinishing a coffee table that was painted white, the lady wants it to be cherry. I have stripped it 3 times already. The top looks good and it ready for a finish, but the sides look streaky. When I clean it with mineral spirits they look fine, but dry streaky. Should I sand it down to bare wood or use more stripper or will cherry gel stain do the trick? Thanks for any advise3dab66206501fb8f8ce720d573d92655.jpg
