DanM
Has anybody had any experience putting polyurethane (or Arm R Seal) over a water based finish like minwax's Polyacrylic? I applied some General Finishes poly over some Polyacrylic on a small section of a door and it surprisingly warmed up the color and looked really nice. However I'm not sure if it will adhere well enough to last. Wondering if anyone knows more about this than me...(finishing is my weak spot) Thanks! Chestnut
I've refinished a desk with oil based poly. Idon't know what was on the desk previously but it adhered well. I'd make sure to scuff the surface before you apply over the poly.

Chestnut
Oh also make sure not to sand through to the wood for some reason there were some weird things that happened with exposed wood next to poly.
wdwerker
Definitely scuff well first. You might give your sample a workout, hot, wet, grease and a cold beer can tests come to mind. Shellac is a universal barrier coat to use between incompatible finishes.
