eball
So I have dark stained wood dining table. The finish is starting to look pretty bad and I would like to put a fresh coat on it. Unsure of the finish used, I dabbed a bit of Lacquer thinner in an inconspicuous spot and it immediately took off the finish and the color. I assume this means the finish was lacquer to begin with. So I was thinking I could clean in up with some Mineral spirits, do a light sand, the spray a couple new coats of lacquer with sanding in between. My question is whether the solvent in the lacquer itself will cause a problem while spraying? (i.e.: remove or blotch the stain underneath) I read somewhere it might cause issues. Some said to spray a couple very light coats to begin with than follow up with heavier wet coats. This if my first time working with lacquer. Just wondering if you guys can give me some guidance before I start.
wdwerker
Misting a few light coats will create a layer to protect the old finish from melting. Very light sanding between coats with 320 or 400 grit.
