byegge
So i got suckered into making a "rustic" table using, you guessed it, pallet wood. Its been about 8 hours and its pretty much done. Since rustic is a synonym for crappy, it went together with my nail gun and glue. My question is what type of finish to use on it. Im not sanding it at all, but will clean it off with compressed air and a wire brush. Was thinking about wipe on poly or varnish. It will reside inside and will double as a dog crate if that helps. Now i don't have a sprayer but thought of a great idea, maybe. I do have a pump insecticide sprayer. If i thinned the finish out enough would it be plausible to spry on thinned poly with that. Im not going to take too much care with drips or anything like that i just want a good couple coats. I would like to add that this project is not an indication of my shotty craftsmanship, i have plenty of other examples for that, but is a favor for a co worker. any hints or tips on this would be great. drzaius
HaHa. There must be a solar flair or something in the water. Seems like there has been a rash of "rustic" projects on the forum lately. Sorry, I'm no help at all. Except that you have my sympathies.
Immortan D
Obviously you already hate that piece! BLO, then wax after a week.

I was excited to build it for her until the word "pallets" came out. Not if any of you have ever made anything from them. I think I'll give the blo a go
Immortan D
Yeah considering you don't want to sand it. not many options there.
byegge
I think sanding would remove the "character". And I'm lazy. Which goes back to my sparyer question. Maybe I'll try it out on some crappy wine rack my girlfriend wants me to make with leftover wood. Pinterest is becoming the bane of my existence
Immortan D
Pallet wood ain't have no character... just an attitude.
bob493
Given the options, I would apply some matte spar urethane with a foam brush, applying thin coats. You can use some 0000 steel wool to smooth coats out without damaging the... "finish".
Chestnut
All i can see happening is that your sprayer is going to be toast after this. You can try and clean it but i have a feeling it's not going to be easy. As lame as brushing sounds I'd say it's probably your best bet. wtnhighlander
Poly comes in rattle cans, you know.

You'd at least have to back brush it, and I'm sure it would destroy the sprayer. Rattle can it.

xxdabroxx
I know this is a necro post, but how would spraying a finish ruin a sprayer? Or was this just sarcasm regarding the finishing of pallet wood?
xxdabroxx
Ahh, now I get it. I know my dad has sprayed Thompsons water seal on a fence with a weed sprayer before, I think he still uses it to spray weeds. HAHA
