Can someone explain to be the purpose of drop by video posting...

I do not understand why someone would go to any length shooting then editing a video,  just to drop into an online community they Are Not a part of,post with nothing else and leave.

Is there some financial gain from these videos with under a thousand hits  and maybe 25 subscribers?

It's hard to get your channel started and just spamming yourself is something that may seem like the only way to go if you are shameless enough to do that.

I generally get somewhere between $30 and $50 a month from my channel with 28k subs.

That makes me wonder if all the people that quit their jobs to do this are incredibly poor.

That's why you usually see so many sponsored ads in their videos.  I don't put out that much content so I don't have a steady stream of new videos every week or whatever or a large library of older videos that keep churning out views.  But that $30 low end is with me doing nothing.  So it's sort of like being able to invest your labor.  I make the video and maybe I get $10 in the first month from it at this point.  But if it's a good video then maybe it just keeps giving me $5 every month from then on.  If you have a 100 videos like that in your library then that's $500 a month.  Still not quitting my day job but it would sure help.  My best month so far was $200 when a video went semi-viral (300k views or so).

If you want to make money, making YT videos is not the way to go (there are a few exceptions to this, but generally unreliable as a source of income).  I have a small channel, and I post my videos there and link to them on a few forums I belong to.

Why?

Well, I like mucking about in my shop.  I also like the process of shooting and editing, so I combine my hobbies.  I also like watching YT videos and I am showing that it can be done on a shoe string budget and hope to get others to start putting up content too.

I monetized my channel at the first of the year and have not made enough to buy a cup of coffee.  That being said, I am a social media idiot and have no clue how to promote my channel effectively.  I use a few forums, a blog, and that's it.  What it boils down to is that I just enjoy what I am doing, and if someone gets something out of it, that is just an added bonus.  In a nutshell, that is what a hobby is all about.

Remember when you were a kid and there was always a neighborhood weirdo who you just knew went streaking naked through the woods?

Those guys found a new exhibitionist outlet - making youtube videos that no one watches.

This answers the question then.

I didn't think youtube paid out for channels with under 100k subs.

Personally, I'm thankful for those that ARE making it, at least the woodworkers. They get by because they are providing something useful to the community.

You and me both some of them are extremely talented woodworkers I have picked a lot of tips and techniques just like this forum only on video.

I just hope the dudes that are posting reactions to movie trailers and trailer breakdowns are NOT making a living from that or I feel like our society is done.

If you want evidence that our society is done, check out the Minecraft videos that are using up the world's bandwidth.

my kids are addicted to it.  It makes no sense to me.  The game never ends and there is no way to win.  Not to get politicial but I think it is designed to brainwash american kids into adopting a life of socialism.

I played the game back when it had just come out and it was a pure sandbox game. For a person that likes to design and build things it's a great game. Your right there is no end, whcih is good because it was all about exploring and building. Now i don't know what the game has become once microsoft has taken it over and probably ruined it but there was nothing brainwashing in it when i played.

I agree that the game is great. It's the millions of stupid videos of even stupider, more annoying people playing the game that are a complete waste.

It's our job as the current "older" generation to NOT completely understand what makes the next generation tick. :)  But just because we don't understand their attraction to it doesn't mean it's without value. The next generation of amazing advances in technology and software will come from the minds that were molded by today's technology. And these kids will think of things that we could NEVER think of, because our brains are somewhat locked into our current understanding of how things work, or how we think they should work.

My son expects all screens to be touch interfaces. He doesn't even know the internet exists and just assumes all media is available on demand. His brain can't even comprehend a world before the internet in the way I couldn't imagine a world prior to television. Maybe it's just seeing the world with rose-colored glasses but I can't wait to see what his generation does with the world. I just hope there's a world left after our generation has its way with it. :)

I may be old, but I'm not an old fart :)  My original comment was not as clear as it should have been. See my post above.
