Popular Post Llama
Why are so many people quick to comment on the cost of someone elses equipment in a negative manner, such as "wow, looks like you spent $1,000 on clamps. I can't afford that!"... Or, "If I had Festool stuff, I could make nice things too" or "If I won the lottery, I could afford that"... These are direct quotes I've seen in the last couple of weeks. I have never had someone come up to me and ask what I do for a living to where I can afford certain things other than from other woodworkers about certain tools. And for the most part, other people don't mention the cost of an item unless they are trying to brag about it. Why does this bother me? It takes away from the discussion about tools and techniques. Most youtube videos have comments at the bottom such as those posted above, and it gets a negative reaction like "mind your own business, cheapskate" and welcomes even more negativity. It gives the entire comment section of youtube and many Facebook posts a bad vibe. Why have so many people gotten away from discussions about technique, and only focusing on brand names and labels? The cold truth of the matter is most people would not be making nicer things if they had Festool or Powermatic things. I know for a fact, because I have nice tools, and I still make garbage. Seems as though these guys (and gals) are looking for an excuse to mask their lack of skill. They should be using that time to reflect on their own shortcomings, and correct them. Maybe more planning is in order, perhaps a class or two to get them on the right path. How about paying attention to detail, and start asking questions about workflow instead of how much someones planes cost them. I didn't know what to call this, so I just randomly did something like this lsjkf;lasdjf and that's what came up. It's fun, you should try it... oohs;lasjk f
Tpt life
Thanks for posting this Mel. Through our long discussions I am glad that tooling has always remained in the back seat. I don't want envy to spoil my appreciation of what people accomplish.
RichardA
The cost of tools is unimportant, it's about technique and finished product! I have old tools, and do as well as any average woodworker with top of the line tools. It's not what you have, it's what you do!
Brendon_t
The answer to the question "why do people do that? " always seems to be because trolls gotta troll.
Popular Post ..Kev
I guess to a certain extent, tool envy is to be expected. I also know full well that there are many doing this hobby that can't afford some of the tools that others have. In reality, there are so many ways to accomplish the tasks that these people can still enjoy the hobby without the fancy luxury tools. In the end, it doesn't matter what tools you have (provided they're safe) as long as you're making sawdust and enjoying your time. Invest in decent lumber and that will make your projects even better! At some point, when you're in a position to acquire those tools, you'll appreciate them much more because you know what it takes to do it without them. Richard is 100% correct! It's not what you have, it's what you do with what you have!

Popular Post sjk
We live in an instant gratification culture. People think they should be able to achieve great things quickly and easily. Clearly, if they only had such-and-such a tool, then they too could produce Krenov pieces in an hour. Look at all the self-stylized "experts" who haven't put in the years to get actually good. Oh - and @Llama, it's a proper noun, the A after the semicolon should be capitalized. ls;Akfhsdlfhs

Popular Post Tom Cancelleri
I've got some pretty solid kit that I've acquired over the last 7 years. I don't build perfect pieces, but I try and have an understanding of how it all works. It takes practice, learning, and failing to get there. Having the right tools just makes it more enjoyable and safer to do. Sent from my 831C using Tapatalk

Dknapp34
I've been stepping up to some serious tools this year, but only because I felt like my skills had reached a point where it was justified (and because buying tools is awesome). The new tools I've bought though have largely been driven by safety considerations, not because I thought it would make me a better woodworker. I'm just as likely to make crap now as I was before, but I'm less likely to lose a finger. Seems to me that it's not worth spending the money on expensive tools unless you know you're going to stick with it and that you have at least some basic skills, which you can only really develop by practice. Unless of course you're rich, in which case, who cares, buy the best from day one and more power to you. Janello
Llamalomadindadoma.ojkonb Wow...that was fun. I'll play devils advocate. Sometimes I think people don't mean to come off as jealous coveting thy neighbors goods. I think they might just be awe stricken. Some folks here really do have more than others can ever imagine, and that can be bewildering to some. I mean, when I see Shane's shop... even I think to myself "How many festool employees did they have to hire to keep up with production?"
Popular Post Eric.
All I know is that the entire contents of my shop don't cost as much as a couple of my buddies' boats...and I have a pretty pimped out shop. No one ever looks sideways at them, but I must be crazy. It's all about what you value and what your priorities are in life. Some people don't have the means...sorry about that. I'm not gonna feel guilty for spending my money on the toys I want. I know millionaires don't care what I think about them and their super expensive toys either. I try not to pay attention to other people too much, they'll only drag ya down!
..Kev
Dead on E! Just like any other hobby, it is expensive! The deeper you get into it, the more expense there is. You have to spend some money up front too if you want to do it right.

Yes you do! On that note, I never hear this with other things. This is why I'm perplexed by this. Most people know that boats cost a lot. A friend of mine has a watch that costs more than my truck. He thinks I'm crazy for my hand planes. Go figure... Certainly no offense to anyone who has made these comments..
davewyo
I think it has more to do with the fact that their are several different levels of tooling in this craft. It's like cycling, fly fishing, or whatever gear-related activity you're into... You have a basic kit, and then you have the "sha-dizzle" ("Say What?") machines. Benchtop equipment, then floor standing tools, then GOOD floor standing tools, then monstrous, killer, super-nice top-end tools. You have all that to aspire to...and you have to hone your skills too? You can't blame anyone for thinking: "Cripes! What a rob-job. I bet if I had an X(Stop), a Y machine with the octagonal cutting blades, and a 22" X machine I could do work like a Pro." wtnhighlander
If I had a flat rock, I could sharpen my chisel. Think that dude from the video a while back, feeding his family by building stools with a saw and hammer held with his FEET is saying "well, if I had HANDS, I could make stuff like a pro!" ??? We all need to shut up.
