midtnwoodworker
I was kinda reluctant to start a journal on a cabinet, but was told to go ahead and go for it so I will give it a shot. It is going to be 94" long x 31" tall. There will be two vessel sinks that will be mounted on top so they wanted it to be a little shorter than normal. It is going to be made out of cherry and cherry ply for the boxes. I will build 3 different boxes and assemble them together on site. The two ends are identical and will go together pretty quick. The slowest part of this build is going to be gluing up panels for the drawer fronts and installing all the drawers. The drawer proportions are not ideal, but it is the size that they wanted. Thanks to Steve (wdwerker) for his advice on the drawer boxes. The first picture is a 3-D model of the approved design. The rest is what I got completed yesterday. Cut all the parts for the two sides and rough cut the parts for the drawer bank. I currently have two saws and one is set up for dado cuts so that saved a lot of time. Got one box glued up and the parts milled for the frame around the opening. Will update later today with more progress, but it will probably just be the other box together, and the frames installed. Tomorrow I will start milling lumber for the drawer fronts. Oh and the weights in the picture were mysteriously sent to me by Amazon without me ever ordering weights so I have put them to good use. Initial Design Some parts cut Milled up frame parts Plywood box The shelf is glued into a dado and the top and bottom stretcher are pocket screwed in.
mat60
So there will be a faceframe on the top of the two end cabinets and the draw frunt overlap the stretcher?
midtnwoodworker
Yeah. That is the look that they wanted so I went with it. I added the stretchers just for support. It wasn't really needed at the top, but I prefer having more than not enough. The ply edges will be edge banded so they won't be visible when the drawer is opened.
midtnwoodworker
Well it is official... I suck at project journals. I just don't ever stop and think to document what I am doing. It isn't part of my workflow and I don't know if I will ever get used to it. Below is the final cabinet before it left my shop. I am still waiting on the tile work to be done in the bathroom before I install it, but I don't see any issues with installation. It is not screwed together or leveled in the picture below so the gaps aren't equal. When it is leveled and attached together the gaps close up to be pretty consistent. It is not my choice in design, but the lady was determined that everything have straight lines, no curves. I was a little surprised when she sent the curved handles, but what can you do.

TerryMcK
Wow that was quick. I just started reading, saw the approved design and then the actual thing - must have missed the inbetween bits . Good work it looks great and I like that grain on the drawer fronts.
gee-dub
That came out great. Is it a solid top or do sinks go in there somewhere? I'm also curious about your finishing protocol.
midtnwoodworker
She talked about just putting towels in the open part on the ends. There will be a solid granite top with two vessel sinks on top of that. That is why it's a little shorter than a typical vanity. The finish is just 3 coats of lacquer. I sand everything with a 800 grit sanding pad and mineral spirits/mineral oil after the last coat. I use sherwood moisture resistant lacquer in medium rubbed effect. Sherwin williams is the only place local to get lacquer, and I have been really happy with it so far.
