Popular Post Janello
A coworker wanted me to make him an umbrella pole. I'm not sure why he didn't just go buy one, but I said yes. Then I thought, what the heck did I get myself into, I don't have a lathe that can chuck up a 24" blank. So after searching for a 1.25 dowel and coming up empty I found a YT video of George Vondriska using a router lathe jig. I reproduced it and here are the results. Mine turned out slightly tapered but should work just fine. A few things I learned. That wooden handle doesn't spin the blank near fast enough, so I used a cordless drill. Bearings of some sort would keep the rod from wobbling in the hole and thus eliminate the taper I got.
Llama
A steady rest would have been useful. Fairly easy to make as well. But, wow! Nice turnout!

It's 3 urethane wheels on bearing that "hug" the work piece while it's turning to keep vibration and that weird oval undulation down.

Chet
Nice John. How long did it take doing it that way?
wtnhighlander
Nice work, John. Izzy Swan did a similar jig that used the tablesaw to do the milling, but I don't think a steady rest would work on that.
