Southwood
OK folks, how can I fill this knot? I thought about just mixing up some epoxy and black dye and filling it. It doesn't go all the way through, but we aren't down to final thickness yet either. This is going to be in a side and may or may not be able to be removed once we get closer to completion, as the sides are tapered. It is for my daughter's 4-H project, so we may make it an focal point, if we can. Wood is Cherry, if you can't tell from the picture. ..Kev
Epoxy is the way to go.. Will stabilize it and allow you to mill the wood as needed.

Instead of dye you could use fine coffee grounds for filler. I did this a couple of days ago. The coffee I used was a dark brown but turned into a rich black in the epoxy. Coop
I think a clear epoxy would look great on that piece and knot jack with Mother Nature!
Popular Post wtnhighlander
Could go ultra-natural, and use epoxy mixed with cherry bark ground in a coffee machine.
gee-dub
Depending on the look you want, cherry has black irregularities so I just use epoxy with a drop or two of black dye. I over fill a bit and pare flat with a chisel when it is at mid-cure. With a top coat on it blends right in. I'll try to find a pic.
Janello
This brings up a question of my own. Will ARS work over epoxy, or would it fish eye?

bleedinblue
And a question of my own. He says it's not at final thickness, so assuming it's going to make a few passes through a planer, will the epoxy not trash the planer knives? I've always assumed it was best to epoxy imperfections when at final thickness or even during/right before finishing.
Southwood
I have never had a problem with it. I am close to final and take shallow passes.
Popular Post Southwood
The project is complete and the fair is over. We did go with the ground bark and epoxy. Really happy how it turned out. She got Grand Champion on her project and the piece will be going to Indy to complete there.
midtnwoodworker
It turned out really nice. Congratulations on the win, it is always a good feeling to help your kids win something. I hope she goes on to win it all.

h3nry
I'm afraid I don't know what a 4-H is, and even seeing the picture I still don't know what one is used for - maybe storing soccer balls on those v-shelves? But a well deserved result nevertheless.
Tpt life
Books my friend. That is a low book shelf with angled shelves so you can read spines sitting lower than eye level. Works for CDs and LPs too, but doesn't look sized right.
Southwood
I will pass along the congrats. Once this thing goes to Indy, I don't expect to place very well. The projects up there are down right amazing. We are planning on making a quick trip up and I will take some pictures.

h3nry
Well I've never seen a book-case designed like that before. I'll still repeat that your daughter should be rightly proud of it.
Popular Post Southwood
She is proud for sure, but she is giving this away, once the fair stuff is over. My wife's sister lost their house to a fire as the daughter was building this. She has decided to give this to them as they lost everything. I am a more proud of that than what she has accomplished so far.
