Popular Post RichardA
The guy I buy my Lumber from, has his own kiln and does small batches of around 15,000 bd. ft at a time! A few years ago, he advertised in our local classified, like c-list, but just local folks use it! I called, we talked, I went to buy some wood, and scope out his operation! He sounded like a nice local redneck! On the way there the first time, I stopped and picked up a six pack, [you never know]! It was hot and we were discussing what wood he had available! At the time I needed red oak, and he had some! We hadn't talked $ at that point, but I did say It's awful damn hot, could you drink a beer? He looked at me as if I were his best friend! We went in the shop, where he does moulding on a $35,000 machine from Europe! And there sits a big gold Harley! A newer model than I've ever owned, but right away we start talking Harleys and beer, and whiskey! He went to a cabinet, and brought out a bottle of some kind of bourbon and poured two fingers in a drinking glass, and we sat on a large stack of walnut and talked for well more than an hour. It seemed like he and I had a hell of a lot in common. He's about 57, and I'm 73, but we hit it off big time! Needless to say, I buy my lumber from Gary now almost exclusively! That day he sold me 50 bd ft for .75 a ft. However for the last couple of years, he rides over to my place on a weekend, and we sit in the shop, talk politic's religion, wood, woodwork whiskey and we think alike! We've become drinking buddies and good friends. My wife and I go visit him and his wife, they come visit us. But he and I always wind up drinking! And my wood cost's have dropped down to almost nothing, and he won't let me pay a fair price! So in return for all he's done wood wise, I determined that I was going to pay him in some small way! And this is what I did! I built him a table from his favorite two woods, walnut and curly maple! He'd never seen one built like this, but everyone on here has, and boy was he surprised! He'd never heard of a floating top before, now he has! He also goes out of his way to buy ambrosia maple to dry, because he likes the color that gets left in the wood. I gave him one, in the top! I delivered the table yesterday, he "forced" me to drink part of the day with him, and he's emailed me at least 6 times telling me how much he likes his new table! I think I done good!

prov163
That's a cool story. I'm leaving Thursday with my wife and some friends are riding our Harley's to Lynchburg to tour Jack Daniels. After all, it's the 150th anniversary. It's great getting lumber at a fantastic price but better to gain a new friend.

The last Harley I owned, was a 1962 panhead, I began having inner ear problems so I stopped riding, It was just as well, the starter on that old scooter was worn out and giving me problems to! 30 minutes ago, wtnhighlander said: Ya done good, for sure Richard! RichardA
Thank's to all that commented! By the way, the finish on this table is two coats of natural Danish oil rubbed in with #0000 steel wool, about a week apart, then 3 coats of lacquer, and a final coat of Johnson's paste wax! It's slicker than a teenage bimbo's butt!

midtnwoodworker
The table looks great Richard! I love the walnut/maple combo. I may have to go visit your friend and check out the lumber he sells. Does he still sell to everyone or do you have to know a guy? And can you be that guy?
