Just Bob
The wife and kids are "surprising" me with the plane for fathers day. They are getting the basic kit. I am going to order the 3/4" iron, but was wondering if I should include the fence. Is it worth the $21.00?
shaneymack
For that price, you might as well. It will come in handy at some point. And its fathers day, you deserve it !!
Immortan D
My LN came with the fence and I did in fact use it a couple of times. I don't think I need it anymore since I recently received my rabbeting plane, which also has a fence.

pkinneb
I have have the Lie Nielsen version with the fence and I don't recall what I was working on but I just used the fence for the first time in the year that I have had the plane and it was a life saver, so for $21 i think I would have it on hand. sjk
I got the fence when I got my Veritas one and I've used it a few times now. Although - several of those times were due to lesson work in the Hand Tool School, which has a router plane with a fence in its minimal semester one toolkit. (no plow plane in semester one). It's handy to have. Say that you're trying to put a groove in a workpiece and there's not quite enough meat for the fence on your plow plane to register well enough to keep the groove bottom parallel to the board face. A router plane with fence flips the equation. The router plane's large body can ride on the board face, ensuring the parallel groove bottom, while the fence can track the edge.
