alexcoulter
Hey all, I've had a few small projects going recently and finally have the work on the one I've been putting off. I've made a tobacco pipe but have no idea the safest way to stain and finish it. Thanks, Alex.
wtnhighlander
Traditional pipes are made of briar root, as I recall. Perhaps they are just buffed to a shine? Meybe a bit of wax? I can't think of any common furniture finish I would feel comfortable using on the bowl of a pipe.
Ronn W
I would try to google a pipe maker and ask him. The bowl can get pretty hot depending on the thickness.
wdwerker
I think any stain would affect taste. If you want a certian color use a wood that color. Briar root is the traditional material used. I am sure you can buy blanks someplace. If your not planning tobacco use any fairly hard wood should work but I still wouldn't use any stain or film forming finish. gee-dub
From this site: The pipe makers stain of choice is Fiebings leather dye. It comes in a variety of colors and if none of those suit your fancy, you can mix them to your heart’s content. It is readily available at Fiebings own website. All it takes to apply the dye is a pipe cleaner.
wdwerker
So I learned something today. The stains I was referring to were the typical woodworking stains.
