Popular Post RichardA
Yesterday, the guy I buy my wood from stopped by the house and brought me a fresh cut piece of Box Elder! He also tells me that lower down in the tree that it was infested by some insect, and the remains of the insect leave this color in the wood as it grows. He also told me that when kiln dried, the red color is enhanced and doesn't fade over time. So, what do you guys think of firewood now?
midtnwoodworker
That's some fine looking firewood Richard! Tell him to just stop by my house and drop off all the lumber he wants!

Not yet, I'm letting it hang around the shop for awhile! When it's ready, it'll tell me what to do with it! I've a guy that makes home made indian blades, and he's always looking for some unusual pieces to display his wares! I think this might end up here. It's only 2" thick, I might be able to get a small piece from the back if I resaw.... But it'll be awhile! 1 hour ago, BeautysBeast said: I really need to meet you and your guy Richard. But he just might surprise you, he's got some shine, that makes you talk in several tongues at once!
BeautysBeast
I make that kind of shine. Mmmmm yummy.

Byrdie
Used to live at a place that had a lot of box elder growing on it. Hated the beetles. Two things I learned about box elder, besides the awesome color variations is that it can be quite soft and that it's in the maple family. I've seen some cool bowls turned out of it but I would think it might be a little soft for a table top or something like that.
RichardA
I agree, it is pretty soft, but for accent pieces it should work quite well, drawer fronts cabinet doors and such! I'ts easy to work, and finishes pretty nice.. It ain't a perfect wood, but that piece was just to cool not to show!

Tom King
I guess you could call that Flame figure. Popcorn Sutton said he could make any kind of moonshine- the Happy Kind, the Loving Kind, the Fighting Kind, and the Crying Kind.
