Popular Post mds2
Here is a sewing basket made of sycamore with lacewood dowels. My grandfather started making these in the early 1960's. This is my take on his design. Edit: A little more history from my grandpa: Edit: talked to grandpa again little more history My grandmother ordered the plans for this box out of a Kansas newspaper. Grandpa can't remember the name of the paper. The templates arrived in the mail, she presented them to him and asked him to make her one. Grandpa started making these sewing boxes at the request of my Grandmother somewhere between 1962 and 1965. Originally he cut all of the parts out with a coping saw and then my grandmother would paint them to give to relatives and close friends. Evenings and weekends between work, family, sports practices, etc.

wtnhighlander
That's pretty slick. So tension on the dowels is the only "fastener"? No glue anywhere?
wdwerker
I really like the design. The sycamore looks great. I can think of a couple of ladies who would appreciate one.

Yes that is correct. One dowel on each end and one underneath.

Brendon_t
I'm interested in your dowel making. What did you do to the steel plate to make it cut the blank round as you spin it through?

What did you do to the steel plate to make it cut the blank round as you spin it through? I needed a 3/16 dowel. So I drilled a 3/16 hole in a steel plate. But then I also drilled two 1/8" holes on each side of my first hole, slightly overlapping. The notch from the over lap creates a cutting edge. I then take a square piece of wood and chuck it in my cordless drill. I taper the end of the piece of wood, then drive it through the hole. The result is a 3/16 dowel. I've never coopered anything before so it'd be fun to try!
