going up friday

i haven't been here lately, been busy at work and on the home front. one of the projects I have been working on is forming and pouring a 18 X 21 slab for a metal building that is supposed to happen this Friday.

it has been quite an adventure because we had flooding rains almost everyday for weeks and then the day of the pour (after canceling due to rain 2 or 3 times ) my neighbor who was going to help me had to travel out of state to get his grandson to college so my 4'6" daughter came to help me. she had such a hard time with the screed board I had to say close is close enough to keep us on speaking terms. I am not at all happy with the outcome of the concrete but it is what it is and will work. I went smaller than I originally planned by about 180 sq feet but with all the work needed on the house I had to cut back somewhere and I feel like 378 sq feet will be plenty workable since I am now in about 84 sq feet. I have been in Grizzly's shop designer and had put a miter saw bench the entire length of one long side but now I am thinking I may go with a portable stand or put a gull wing on the back wall outside and put it there. so far I haven't used it a whole lot but if it was more convenient to use I might. right now I have 2 saw horses tied together with 2x4's which the saw sits on with scraps of 5/4 board screwed on for leveling the work piece so shorter pieces require some effort. I welcome thoughts on setting it up inside VS outside.

I am excited as redneck as it may be and will spend the weekend getting set up, working on some shelving and storage. I have two other out buildings so I am not going to fill it up with everything I own, I tend to want everything close at hand and I end up with a cluttered mess, I am going to try to break that habit now and just keep the essentials at hand and everything else where it is now, whish me luck.

a question for the concrete guys. my intent was to paint the floor for light and ease of cleaning but the morning of the pour I wasn't happy with the grade so I took up the moisture barrier and it was beyond getting sealed back up, I have a clay base about four inches thick and then about 3 to 4 inches of clean sand on top of that, is there any chance once it is cured off for a long time that I may still be able to get it to hold paint??

thanks for listening.

Holding the paint is going to have a lot to do with the moisture level under the slab.  I would have left the poly moisture barrier in place.  Watch your slab over the next few weeks for any signs of moisture like dark spots or ares that feel cooler than other areas.  These are some indications or moisture coming up through the slab.  This kind of moisture transmission can cause finishes to fail.

Bet your excited!  I know I was once I got the concrete poured.  My shop is 17 x 30 and I put my miter/router table station on one wall, the station is 21' long.  I put open shelves underneath and used the back wall for clamps and tool racks. It has been a little over 2 yrs now and I have no regrets. You can see pictures here:

Congratulations on the new shop and good luck.  Show us some pictures!
