Paddy
Hi Guys I've been working on an outside table. I've finished the legs (Pine) using Danish oil but the wife isn't a fan and has decided that painting the legs with a Gloss Dark oak would be nicer. I've done a bit of research and the best I can see I can find is that I should do the following: Rub down with white spirit Sand lightly (220 grit) Do you think that would work? Thanks for any advice!
wdwerker
"Gloss dark oak " what kind of finish is that? I would rub down with a gray abrasive pad ( like Scotch Brite) and mineral spirits. Then there would be no need to sand.
xxdabroxx
I get the feeling he is trying to stain the pine legs the color of gloss dark oak, probably one of those minwax all in one stains?
wtnhighlander
I would consider a coat of shellac between the previous finish and the paint, just as a precaution.
Paddy
Thanks for the reply guys. I'm was thinking of using the gloss paint below: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00NFCYR5Y/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I think I might just give it a god with the rubbing down and mineral spirit. I'll let you guys know how I get on! might be one of those that I don't know the error of my ways till a year down the road! Again thanks for the reply guys! TerryMcK
Hi Paddy welcome to the forum. As the guys eluded to coating with shellac first of all will be a good option. In the UK a good premixed shellac is Liberon sanding sealer. One or two coats of this before putting the Ronseal on top would be a good option. You might need more than one coat of Ronseal BTW (read the can). https://www.amazon.co.uk/Liberon-SS250-250ml-Sanding-Sealer/dp/B000TVK42Y/ref=sr_1_1?s=diy&ie=UTF8&qid=1472114794&sr=1-1&keywords=sanding+sealer
Paddy
Hi Terry, Thanks for the suggestion I've put some on order now! I was planning on two coats of the Ronseal (want to avoid having to re-finish it in the future!) Regards
