Popular Post dflan004
Just recently finished my first dovetail box. getting married in a week and we are using this box as an anniversary wine box. i did a pine box with hand cut dovetails and a pine box lid with what i think is cherry in the center? (was a random off cut i had. not really sure, im not good at identifying wood types) I think the dovetails turned out pretty good.. there are a few gaps but for the most part they are tight. ive only been wood working for a couple months and have mainly cheap hand tools. but im pretty happy with how this turned out.
Eric.
Nice job! Next time try making them with smaller pins...gives them a more refined look. Yeah that's cherry, quartersawn.
dflan004
thanks! yeah i went for smaller dovetails at first but was really struggling to get them tight and gap free.
xxdabroxx
Pine is tough too, it likes to smoosh rather than cut if your tools aren't super sharp. Good job on the box!
Dknapp34
Good job! Looks a lot better than my dovetails when I had only been woodworking for a few months. Especially with cheap tools. If you stick with the woodworking, invest in a good dovetail saw. You won't be disappointed. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
prov163
First off, congrats on the wedding! Best wishes for a long happy marriage. That box looks great. I get what Eric's saying but now that you know how to cut dovetails you can refine. I just started cutting my first dovetails a couple of days ago. Hope mine look as good as yours in a couple of months. Of course, now she knows you have magic skills so the project list just got longer ? dflan004
Haha yeah the list is steadily getting longer. I still have a patio set I have to finishas soon as the weather gets a little cooler. I have to earn my way to justify getting some better tools like jointer/planer/table saw. Etc Here is the finished box. I used the plane shaving for the inside.

wtnhighlander
Congratulations on the wedding, and on this woodworking accomplishment! Dovetails in pine are NOT easy to do well, it is so soft.
