Rex Edgar
What are the guidelines for drill press speeds for larger bits. I'm getting ready to drill some large holes 3 1/4" and 3 1/8" in walnut. Is it like router bits, larger slower, and if so how slow?
Guest
Are you using a hand held drill or drill press? In any case, I go as slow as possible while still cutting wood. I see no reason to rush it.
Rex Edgar
I don't weigh enough to chuck a 3"+ bit in a hand held drill. My old bones snap too easily.......
Immortan D
Forstner bits, right? According to my chart, 450 RPM for 3" on hardwoods. Doesn't go beyond 3" BTW.
Dave's Not Here
You might want to print this out for future reference; http://images.meredith.com/wood/images/pdf/speedchart.pdf

Provides guidelines if I need them and reminds me that the proper speed for the bit makes a big difference in the quality of the cut. ben_r_
This is the one I have laminated and keep in the shop next to the drill press: LINK
TerryMcK
Both those linked charts are good. The advice is the larger the diameter the slower the spindle speed. That way the cutting edge of a bit on the periphery of the tool should always be a similar linear speed.
