Violet Arrow
My day job office is being renovated. When they cut out the entry door it looked to me like the frame was stained solid mahogany. There was some small trim pieces, but the frame and mullion was 10/4. I thought I would ask if anyone could tell what wood this really is Thanks! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Popular Post phinds
Likely one of those hundreds of Shorea spp. that are sold as luan or Philippine mahogany. They're all inexpensive and fairly stable so quite popular for solid core doors. If you get a well cleared up end grain and take a well focused closeup of it I might be able to tell more. No one in their right mind is going to put that kind of stain or paint or whatever it is on actual mahogany.
Eric.
Yeah if I had a gun to my head I'd say African mahogany, but like Paul said, it could be one of many similar species. It's not Honduran for sure, which means it's nothing special.
Immortan D
I'm most likely wrong, but looks like there's a thin veneer there.
Violet Arrow
Thanks for the input. Here is a picture of the end grain and what the door used to look like. I looked up shorea spp It could be that. I was thinking of making some hand tool shop tools and some boxes. Also depending on if I get the nails out and how much wood I get maybe a small table. phinds
Can't see any real detail in those pics. See my site (in my signature) for the kind of thing I'm talking about (although I do NOT expect you to go to the lengths I do).

Tell that to the woman who almost bought the Gamble house 70 years ago so she could paint the interior Mahogany white. Thankfully Mrs. Gamble veto'd the sale. -E

In her defense, she was trying to buy The Gamble House. She can't be too crazy. Or, maybe she has multiple personalities? One with good taste, and one without? Yep. Or maybe her "right mind" is just nutso.
