Popular Post MisterDrow
So my shop is confined to half of the 2-car bay of the garage as the 3rd bay already has other plans. Through a bunch of various household and friend projects, this space has become a nightmare and I've avoided doing anything about it for some time now. I've got a bad case of "I'll just set this here for now" as you can see. So I am starting to do things to help make more open workspaces and turn this space into a shop I can use. I will put many things on wheels so that if I need more room I can back my wife's SUV out and utilize that space easily, too. First step today was to start getting crap off of my workbench. (The miter saw used to be on the front right corner of it) Today I built a miter saw stand that I can put up and take down in about 2 minutes. Cost me about $12 in materials and about an hour in the garage. Works like a charm! Now to build more clamp racks and start organizing the crap that's scattered all over the damn place!

MisterDrow
Nice job on the saw stand. Good luck!! Eventually I'll do something more fancy with storage and whatnot that sits against the wall but I don't have time for that now and needed to start organizing the space before deciding where certain fixtures are going to go. Popular Post Chet
That is a nice start. From here on out if it were me and it's not, I would take an afternoon or evening and clean. Put everything away that you can and get rid of what you don't need, you need to be hard on yourself. Even organize all your wood scraps, they will come in handy some where down the road. Once you have a clean slate you can better organize for the future. Even though you have things put away come up with a plan for their permanent location, or as permanent as this first version of your shop will allow, but organize them now with like items, i.e.. measuring devises together. You will find that if you get things organized this way you will tend to keep them put away at the end of the day and you can grow from there. Your shop will keep changing when your work flow and tools change. Have fun!

Popular Post ..Kev
Chet hit the nail spot on. I like to count steps from where I do the bulk of my work. Items that I use the most are the fewest steps from my work location. Everything gets a home! This has helped a great deal with productivity in my shop!

I find it much easier to picture what I what to do with a space when it is clean..even better is empty.
mat60
That miter saw stand would work great on the job site also.
MisterDrow
Got all of my clamps up on the wall along with some table saw jigs I had made. Now they are no longer cluttering surfaces and are simple to find and store. Tonight my goal is to get my workbench completely cleared off. No band saw, no scraps... just a clear workbench. I can't really use my benchtop band saw right now anyways since I need to get a new set of (tiny) allen wrenches to adjust the guides. It wanders WAY too much right now. I'm secretly hoping that I can find a nicer band saw via Craigslist before I need it. Now that I have a scroll saw I can get by on most things for now. After the bench is cleared, I'll drill some dog holes and make a pipe-clamp vise. Planning on adding a couple shelves down below, too, to increase storage capacity. This bench will get moved out to the middle of my shop area to make it more usable once that area is cleared. That should hold me over until next Spring when I want to build a split-top workbench. I'll be making a station for my band saw, drill press, and scroll saw in the coming weeks that sits where my workbench is now.

You may want to think about what you want to store on the shelves before adding them. Have a plan for your storage or the storage can quickly turn in to a catch all space and then you are back to square one.
MisterDrow
Just now, Chet K said: You may want to think about what you want to store on the shelves before adding them. Up to now the garage has just been a place where I do things when needed... I am, for the first time, trying to actually have a purpose and set organization for my shop space so it can function as exactly that. I'm more than a little ashamed of the disaster that it has become but one step at a time and I'll have it fixed up and functional.
AceHoleInOne
Me likes the chop saw stand, very clever! Is it twisty at all? Looks like there's not much of a bite on the beam from the leg tops. -Ace- Edited November 14, 2016 by AceHoleInOne added more info
MisterDrow
Me likes the chop saw stand, very clever! -Ace- I can't take credit for the idea... found a video on YouTube for it. The guy who made it wanted something quick and easy to set up on job sites. I figured for what I'm currently trying to accomplish in the shop it would work well for me, too. MisterDrow
Much better! All that hard work is paying off! Still have a ways to go but we had lots of space yesterday to work more on that desk I'm building. The metal shelves next to the white cabinet and that god-awful pegboard are going away and I'm going to put up French cleats for some organizational things to hang on. I also need to make some scrap wood storage because the u-haul boxes I'm using aren't cutting it and that's only going to get worse.

freedhardwoods
Looking real good. I didn't get any before and after pics when I cleaned up my original shop. It gives you a really good feeling to be able to get to all your tools & parts and actually have room to do something.

It still has a long ways to go but I had enough room and organization in place that I was able to get a ton of things done over the holiday. Felt really good, too!
