If you've never had to have a pet put to sleep - count yourself fortunate. He was the best dog we've ever had and will probably be the last. We decided to have him cremated and my wife asked me to make him a cremation urn large enough to hold him and a couple of his favorite toys. I don't mind saying that several tears were shed during its construction - this is from someone who rarely cries. This was the hardest project I've ever had to build. I used cherry wood to make the urn with a spray can finish. I had the local trophy shop engrave his name in the top. It may seem strange to some to go to so much trouble and expense for a dog. I've got two wolves that have owned me from 5 weeks old to now, 13 years, they are near the end of their life span, and every day when we feed, I tear up knowing that soon they'll be gone. They have been my pack every day of their lives, and they taught me so much about relationships. Its a terrible thing having to put a pet down. I have had dogs my entire life and consider them a member of the family as well. Two years ago I had to put my 9 year old great dane down. I lied with him on the floor of the vet while he took his last breaths...i balled like a freaking baby. Miss that guy... A pet is just as much a member of the family as a sibling, parent, or child and it's so incredibly hard when they are gone. My wife breeds guinea pigs and rabbits but the kids are so involved that they are all just like our pets (we've got dogs, too). You'd never think you'd get attached to a guinea pig but there are some that just have the most amazing personalities and it's particularly crushing when they pass as well. People can learn how to deal with death but you never get used to it. Try to keep your mind focused on all the positive memories. Unless you've experienced the unconditional love and devotion that only a good dog can offer you can't relate to the loss once they're gone. You've done Barney right. Yesterday I celebrated 9 years with my Maggie. Like Rick said earlier, she has taught me much about relationships, loyalty, living in the moment and appreciating the seconds we have together.
