Popular Post Isaac
My wife has a Christmas concert at the church she sings for and she needed a box to collect donations. I whipped this up from some scrap pine and walnut. First time I tried spline joints. I'm happy with how the miters came together. Two lessons learned: The splines actually helped a lot in the glue up I used the table saw to cut the grooves for the splines. It worked well, but the jig I put together was really only made to run through in one direction, so I wound up with splines that alternate shorter on one side and longer on the other. In this case it really didn't bother me, because there is a clear symmetry to the resulting pattern, but in another situation, I'd have to plan for this. Sorry for the dark images.

wouldwurker
The splines actually helped a lot in the glue up > Never seen anyone cut the grooves for mitre keys before the glue up. Cool technique. Especially if it helps glue up the box without it slipping.
Chet
The box came out great Isaac.
wtnhighlander
I didn't take note of your spline cutting technique, before Vinny pointed it out. How DID you manage to cut the spline slots before gluing up the box?

Isaac
Sorry I probably messed up the lingo. I meant the walnut strips you can see in the images, should I be calling those keys? I just created a jig to hold the board at a 45 degree angle from the table. I will try to photograph tomorrow, it is pretty simple. I guess you could add them after, I'd never seen it done before and just thought it made sense to cut them first. They did help with alignment and glue up quite a bit. From an engineering perspective, I feel gluing them all at once should yield a stronger joint, but the difference will likely be trivial.
