Ryjjjames
I applied one coat of 1/1 thinned pure tung oil. Let cure 2 days. 4 coats spray lacquer. And this is what happened. Thoughts?
Popular Post wdwerker
Picture didn't post. I am guessing you didn't wipe back the tung oil enough and left way too much on the surface and then didn't give it enough time to cure and harden. In the future when finishing sand and prep some scraps from the project and finish them the same way. Then you could have made the mistake on the scrap instead of your project. Tung oil and Danish oils can take several days to a week or more to cure, especially in cold weather. Wipe back completely so there isn't any excess on the surface , just what has soaked in is left to cure. Working in a warm space with decent air movement will help. But dust in the air will settle and stick
wtnhighlander
My first thought is "why lacquer over tung oil?" Some coloration you were shooting for? Steve is most likely correct, the oil wasn't fully cured.
wouldwurker
Agree. If it's 'pure' tung oil, (no varnish or flash-off solvents) 2 days isn't nearly enough time to dry. Also, per the last post, unless you really wanted some yellow in the wood, why oil under the lacquer?
