Immortan D
Didn't know this thing even existed. Used to hand burnish wood with or without wax. LN sells them, for a while (https://www.lie-nielsen.com/product/toms-toolbox/polissoir?node=4225), for $36. Anyone tried something like this? I wonder what material they used for those sticks. Tpt life
First saw it here where it is referenced as broom straw. I think you could make your own.
xxdabroxx
I tried using a bundle of skewers on an end grain cutting board. It worked ok, but if I were to mess with it again I would buy a whole pack, bind them tightly then cut them all flush on my chop saw. Maybe round the edges a bit with a sander.

Immortan D
Apparently it's good ol' broom corn, according to Chris Schwartz (http://www.popularwoodworking.com/woodworking-blogs/chris-schwarz-blog/make-nice-polissoir). There's even a link to a PDF file with construction plans... No idea how much an old broom costs so I can buy one and take it apart. I haven't seen one of those in years. Chet
This is where I get my brooms. I still like these the best for sweeping, especially for out doors. uline.com-cornbroom
Immortan D
Thanks for the link. Chris Schwartz made a redneck version, looks like crap though: He said they work as well as the nice ones. Dunno why he used hose clamps instead of something like cable ties, looks like one needs gloves to use that thing, oh well.
Gilgaron
I made mine with straw from a hand whisk broom, and used the hose clamps to hold it in shape while I whipped it with seine twine around it. I also made another out of bamboo skewers like dabro mentions. The latter one should be able to texture softwood by removing the early wood but I haven't tried to do that yet. They work well! Be careful cutting the straw out of the hand whisk, it had more metal wire inside that surprised me, but I was just using a little hardpoint hand saw so it didn't result in anything 'exciting'.
