Organization - By use or by category?

How does everyone organize their shop / tools? Do you organize by use (marking, cutting, measuring, etc...) or by category (screwdrivers, clamps, squares, wrenches, etc...) ?

I organize by what I use most frequently.  Those items that I use most frequently live closest to where I do my primary work.  Obviously you try and keep like items together but, an attachment that goes with X that you rarely use doesn't need to be stored with X.  Use that space for something that you do use all the time.

Mine are by use, Marking in one drawer, chisels and rasps in another and hand planes in another.  But more importantly they are located close to were they would be used in the work flow.

Both, I have what is used the most close to me. What is extra/ overflow / not used that often, is by use. Works for me.

I tend to organized by use: planes, squares, pencils, bandaids.  It's only a few steps to get to almost anything in the shop, so I guess that frequency of use is not my primary concern.  That said, of course I will get the tools and band aids needed for a particular task and have them immediately at hand on the work bench.

I have a stack of drawers that originally held architectural plan sheets. Top drawer is layout tools then general hand tools, chisels, drafting tools & pens/ pencils, saw blades, edgeband rolls, painters pyramids.

The only thing Coop organizes is his tokillya bottles.
