Audiokat
Could I put a few coats of salad bowl finish on after using mineral oil? I've used SBF a few times and loved the result and longevity. I recently did a set of boards with just mineral oil. After four coats and some cure time my wife washed a board after using the grain rose substantially. Im sure I could sand all the way down and start over but it would be nice to just add a few coats of bet salad bowl finish.
Brendon_t
I have tried it and the results were garbage. The sbf was still gummy after a week or so. I assume because mineral oil never actually does out.
wdwerker
Nothing's going to dry well on top of mineral oil. Maybe wiping several times with laquer thinner might work to remove the oil ? Try a small patch and if the Salad bowl finish dries you could do the rest of the board.
Audiokat
Sorta what I figured. Maybe I'll just let the wife use it for a few months. It will dry out and a lot of the oil will get washed out. Then I guess I will just sand and do it over. Live and learn.
Popular Post wtnhighlander
Beeswax is excellent with mineral oil. Yes, it still requires periodic maintenance, but nowhere near as much as you think.

I use roughly a 2:1 mineral oil to beeswax mix, but it's difficult to measure out cold, as the wax is solid. I put it on a hot plate to melt and mix everything, then apply it with a rag.

Initially, I use a mix that is mostly oil, but after a couple of coats soak in, I switch to more wax. The "maintenance" formula is about the consistency of wax shoe polish.
