Andy Faust
Hey guys looking to improve my sharping and use my stones less and use a leather strop. Where is a good place to get leather for a strop. Thanks
wdwerker
Go to Goodwill , Salvation Army or someplace like that and get a large thick leather belt . If there is a Tandy Leather store around they should have something that will work for you.
JosephThomas
Good idea Steve. Anyone have a link to stropping compound on Amazon or similar? Just Bob
I have a barbers razor strop that I have used since I was 14. (A couple of years ago). I have never used a compound on it and it does a fabulous job. It has always been my final step in my sharpening routine. I just looked and they are still available at reasonable prices. Crap I just did the math, I've had it for 50yrs, and it was used when I bought it. Now I'm depressed.

Woodenskye
Woodcraft used to have leather sheets for making your own strop, at least that is where I got mine. The other place would be looking at the different knife making supply places, they sell for sheath making.
wtnhighlander
I beats the alternative ! And razor strops have beat numerous mischievious young men ... Places like Hobby Lobby or Michael's crafts often have suitable leather. Harbor Freight has various buffing compounds. A piece of mdf works about as good without the leather. I have a few strops with varying grits. I generally only use the coarse one though, 1000 grit I believe. https://www.amazon.com/Diamond-Lapping-Polishing-Compound-microns/dp/B00MALWGBI/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1483634239&sr=8-2&keywords=lapidary+paste I also bought my leather on amazon and contact cemented them to mdf strips about 3" wide. Bulldog
For sharpening, I use horse butt leather with Lee Valley's green stuff. I like it.
