I started to install a gate on the stairs but realized the style was the kind that spreads outward for support, like a shower curtain. This caused the newel posts to give just enough to make installation impossible. So what does one do when their hobby is woodworking? What he should have done from the beginning. This was made from scraps in an afternoon. Domino joinery. It's maple on the top and bottom and aspen for the slats. The maple is stained GF Java gel, which was leftover from when I refinished the stairs so it's a perfect match. It's a little tough to tell in the pictures but did you mount the hinges directly to the newel? Nope, I made a corner "L" piece that wraps around half of the newels and all hardware attaches to them. They are simply zip tied onto the newels. bleedinblue Posted January 26, 2017 Author Report Share Posted January 26, 2017 The wife decided she wanted a matching gate for the top of the stairs...it was slightly different because I had to account for the hand rail.
