Popular Post AJ_Engineer
I knew this was a risk when I married a Canadian. Maple syrup everywhere, too many extra 'U's stuck in words, things called garburators in your sink. It's not that we got run off by the pitchfork and torches crowd, or she needed to move back home. Oh no, my job found out and said "Hey AJ, you should move to Canada for this new project we have!". So I'm moving to Calgary right after finishing my workshop (insulation, lights, heating...) and workbench ("She's a beaut Clark") but before building a whole lot of anything. That leaves me with a dilemma and I was hoping some folks would have some input. Shortly on the upgrade list for tools would be the table saw to a Sawstop/PM2000 and planer to a Grizzly spiral job. How badly do folks get screwed in the great white north on the stationary equipment? Looking at the Sawstop prices it seems it's about a 10% hit beyond the currency conversion. I can't find accurate pricing for the Grizzly stuff. Current Festool pricing seems to be right on with currency conversion rates so that doesn't seem too bad, plus I'll be traveling back and forth I can throw a handheld tool in a checked bag and take it back with me. Should I think about upgrading these tools earlier and have the movers ship things? Then there is the whole how to pack things up. I'll have the full packing/shipping corporate style move but would you do anything to prepare your hand or power tools for shipment? I've got most of the black plastic tips my Narex chisels shipped with but also am thinking about the dipped rubber coating Whiteside router bits come in. On the bright side Lee Valley showroom is five minutes from our office building, I could buy a new plane or handsaw over lunch. And somehow taxes are less (as in half) on an $800,000 house in Calgary than a $200,000 house in Omaha Nebraska... Of course there are a few other things I'll have to learn.
Popular Post Coop
Prepping my hand tools would be the least of my concerns. You know how cold it gets in the winter in Omaha. I'd be getting me an R-36 jock strap! Good luck with your move dude!

Woodenskye
I moved out of Nebraska after school, so I would look at this as a positive! But take Coop's advice, it's solid.

I will say my only experiences in New Jersey have been standing around jobsites near Newark and the port.......
ChrisG-Canada
I bought my tablesaw, jointer and bandsaw from Grizzly and had them delivered to my house in Canada. It's certainly doable.

Just Bob
1. Good luck! 2. Lived in Nebraska, good corn, great beef, great pheasant hunting, good people, really crappy winters. 3. If my choice is Nebraska vs Canada....in my humble opinion moose is better, Canada has outstanding fishing, just enjoy the adventure! Ronn W
It's cheaper to ship timbits to the US than a Sawstop to Canada....just saying. Good luck, eh!
Popular Post freedhardwoods
I can't help with the prices or packing. I have been to Canada several times. The people in Canada seemed really nice. The people at the border suck. I had my truck strip searched more times than my other co-workers combined. Some of my co workers said it was because I looked like Osama Bin Laden. One called me Osama all the time.
drzaius
Welcome to Calgary AJ! My office is only 5 min from Lee Valley as well, which I love (and hate). Last I checked, Powermatic was priced at US x the exchange rate.
TerryMcK
Learn a few words like Eh and Aboot and you will be ok . great that you are going to be near Lee Valley but that might get a little expensive. Marc has done a few shop move videos you may pick something up from those.

Pondhockey
Calgary!!!! I'm so jealous. All that wood. The Canadian Rockies, Banff, Jasper.... The Calgary Flames. What's not to like, eh? When you get tired of that job, let me know, so that I can apply. (And what a great time to move!!!) drzaius
And, as a bonus, all national parks have free admission in 2017. There are Banff, Jasper, Yoho and Kootenay parks that are all spectacular & all within about 1-3 hours of Calgary. Here's a little taste of what Alberta has to offer
