lighthearted
Hello-- I am shopping for a rip saw. This ebay listing says its a rip saw. Looks like a crosscut to me. Am I correct? Thanks http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sharp-Disston-Sons-D8-26-Thumbhole-Skew-Back-Rip-Saw-1896-1917-5-TPI-INV-/112279633290?hash=item1a24633d8a:g:FCcAAOSw-0xYhrtn
Gilgaron
It's definitely the thumb hole rip handle... teeth look ok near as I can tell. If they were refiled crosscut they at least don't look like it'd take much work to take the extra fleam off.
lighthearted
the fleam is what make me think it was a cross cut.
James Wright
there is a little fleam in the teeth. my bet is it was refiled to be a hybrid cut. also the teeth look to be relaxed a bit. but you can resharpen it to whatever you want.
TerryMcK
It's rip and James is right as it has a little fleam. However the closeup photo shows slightly uneven teeth. When (if) you buy it, use a flat file to level the teeth then use a saw file to sharpen it to a rip profile. It is really easy to do. It is a little more than I would be prepared to pay - I would pay no more than $50 + shipping.
RichardA
The set of the teeth and the fleam make it to be cross cut. That's easily changed.
doyle007
I have the D-8 Disston with the thumb hole handle, and it is a gem. Mine is filed rip, and rip it does. It goes through wood like a knife through butter.
