cmekvold
Writing from eastern Oregon at the moment! Bonjour. I'm interesting in learning how to wood carve, but I'm still waiting for my tools to be delivered. So I'm brand new! Pondhockey
Welcome! A friend and I (in SW, and Central Idaho) have begun working with Juniper, sometimes from Eastern Oregon. That wood should be readily available to you; some of it has very interesting color and figure. You might give it a try.
cmekvold
I haven't seen that type of tree yet! I'll have to see if anyone I come across has some I can use Thank you!
wtnhighlander
Welcome! Carving isn't the most discussed topic around here, so I'm betting your presence will stir some interest.

Pondhockey
One of the great things about carving is that you can start with a chunk of firewood! I'm also looking forward to learning from what you come up with.
cmekvold
Thank you Pondhockey! That is something that I am eager to try! I'm curious how that would work out. Wouldn't it have to dry for a year before it would be able to be carved effectively?

You can dry a chunk of wood in the oven at low temperature in a matter of (several, at least) hours. If you are interested I'll look up the USDA Forest Products Lab info on this. It is true that for those of us working on several or many large slabs or dimensional wood, even in kilns, it takes many months to dry. It is also true that firewood "rounds" typically take similar times to dry. Drying times also depend greatly on species - Tamarack/Larch dries much more quickly than Douglas Fir. I don't exactly know where Juniper fits in except that I dried 10 slabs in my garage from about 18% to now less than 6% in about 5 months. Small carvable wood "blanks" could have dried much faster, especially in an oven. You may have to experiment with techniques to avoid "checking" (cracks.) But with small pieces, that experimenting should go pretty quickly (and maybe you can find where someone has done it for you!)

cmekvold
Pondhockey: That's true! I had forgotten about the oven thank you for the reminder. It will be interesting figuring this out, that's for sure. ClassAct: Thank you! I was just over there a few days ago! It really is beautiful, I have been enjoying the views as well. Gorgeous country!
