The wife and I are going to be putting in an outdoor kitchen and hate the look of stainless steel cabinet doors. We saw some pictures of wooden doors and naturally I said heck I can build us those. Then came the realization that I was trying to build cabinet doors and drawers for an uncovered outdoor environment. That is why I come to my fellow wood workers. Maybe you all can help solve some of these questions.

1, Overall wood choice in door/exposed wood. I was thinking cypress, Ipe, teak(not really)
2. I will be putting in a series of drawers. I was going to build them in a box similiar to a regualr cabinet although this box will slide into the hole in the brick. What would you guys use for drawer slides in an outdoor environment?
3. Will marine grade plywood do better then regular plywood that has been finished? Like the drawers I was going to build a cabinet to slide into the bay created by the mason to put in a adjustable shelf. I would have to either build the cabinet on some levelers to keep the wood off the concrete or buy something that won't rot from exposure to moisture.

Any other considerations I should take in mind would be helpfull.

Thanks.

May I sugget you take a look at Marc's video http://blip.tv/the-w...-effect-5926352 that may give you some wood suggestions for wood that sat out unprotected...

Choose a good wood and use marine quality finishing products. If you have a boat shop around, they ould also be a good resource for advice...

Instead of paying a fortune for teak, you can use mahogany which is a fraction of the price of teak. If you use a good finish (and don't live in Southern Cal ... because you can't get finish here) you will be OK.

I build some gates with Cypress and they turned out to be OK also. Cypress is a bit soft but takes the weather well.

What look are you going for?

Use starboard or pvc board for the insides of the drawers and the slides. It will not rot.

Mahogany and oil it , easier to renew the finish. Marine ply or pvc for the case. Cypress might be a good choice for the drawers. Cypress plank door with batten boards across the back might be a quick solution. Is this going out in the open or under a roof or overhang? Raised panel doors will trap water in the panel groove if it is exposed to rain.

How about a budget? Mahogany is pricey and it all depends. Iroko is not a bad choice ... How abut a budget per bft?

White oak, Mahogany, Cypress, Western Red Cedar, Ipe, Marine plywood, and a really good finish.
