hudsonoffice
I have decided to build a chest of drawers awhile ago and now I am getting back to it. I have made my side panels of solid wood versus the plywood. So the question is where should I appy my glue on the webframes? Just on the front web where the legs meet or just the back or both front & back? And what about glue on center support?
thewoodwhisperer
I would apply glue to the area you LEAST want to see movement. And the place where movement would be the biggest visual issue is at the front. So I'd probably apply glue to the front 3-4" and let the back float. As for the center support, can you clarify a bit? CessnaPilotBarry
In other words, where pieces align, either flush or with a reveal, and are seen and touched most, is the first choice for glue. As Mark wrote, most often the front. Remember... EVERYTHING that attaches to the sides needs to be glued in the same area, so the movement will happen where you want. If you glue the web frames at the front, do the same with moldings, tops, drawer guides and kickers, etc... It might be obvious, but I've seem pieces where folks glued moldings at the front corners, and guides at the back.
hudsonoffice
Great answers gentlemen would expect nothing less from this forum. I will glue on the front. Mark, what i meant was should I apply glue also at the rear divider support "D"?
hudsonoffice
Mark, When you say 3-4" in front I still do not want any glue on the center panel correct?
thewoodwhisperer
Hey Hudson. I would NOT apply glue to the rear divider support. Just let the frames float in the grooves. Now when you say "center panel" are you referring to the back panel or the center of the side panel. Either way, no glue in either location. Bobby Slack
Great topic. I am building a web frame small entertainment center wit a deck, a mid shelf, top shelf plus table top. Will have pictures soon. All my joinery is done with dominos. the blades were going to be glued to the front and rear face frame but now I will not. Thank you.
